The History of Sex Advice – Are We Really More Sexually Liberated Now?

According to some, the world has become an incredibly sexualized place. It’s true that there are more people openly discussing sex in the form of books and websites that offer everything from routine sexual health advice to detailed penile enlargement reviews. While we may be discussing sex more openly, does that mean we’re really more sexually liberated than earlier generations?

Sex and the City… Victorian Style

When it comes to discussions about sexual behavior and attitudes, it’s impossible not to think of the Victorians. The Victorian era has become synonymous with sexual repression thanks to stories about piano legs being Sexual Liberationcovered for being too salacious and women corseted up so tight that sexual stirrings or fantasies were absolutely the last thing on their minds. But beneath that veneer of stoic respectability and prudish propriety was a bubbling sea of pure sexuality.

In fact, the Victorians were raunchy enough to put Hugh Heffner to shame and make Carrie Bradshaw and her friends blush. Don’t believe it? Check out Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing ‘s 1886 best seller, ‘Psychopathia Sexualis: eine Klinisch-Forensische Studie’. The book’s title translates to ‘Sexual Psychopathy: A Clinical-Forensic Study’ but it was not translated when released to English speaking markets. The decision was made in the hopes of preventing the book from being read by the general public but it didn’t do much to dampen the public enthusiasm. Forget ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, this book features a catalog of sexual exploits and conditions so graphic and extreme that ‘ Psychopathia Sexualis’ continues to be one of the definitive sex books in the history of mankind. And the Victorian public couldn’t get enough of it.

The Evolution of Sex Advice

Although no sexual practice is new – sex positions and preferences have been written about since ancient times – talking about them openly has been frowned upon for years. Even now, with all of our sexual liberation there are still sexual health matters that have remained in the closet. But thanks to the work of many writers, doctors and medical experts, we truly are more open about discussing sexual health, reproductive issues and the importance of a healthy sex life.

Sex advice was dispensed through small publishers, seedy magazine and, of course, in bathrooms and playgrounds all over the country for years. Although publicly sex was still a taboo subject, there were plenty of outlets for those who wanted to get their fix. Although the evolution of sex talk in the public area is multi-faceted many people credit Helen Gurley Brown’s 1962 book ‘Sex and the Single Girl’ with really breaking down the walls and bringing the topic of a healthy sexual appetite into the public arena.

Since then, sex has become a way for people to see everything from cars to mints and sex advice and reproductive health is now the focus of dozens of magazines and thousands of books, not to mention a near endless number of websites.

Changing Attitudes, Changing Perceptions

With all the talk and attention sex gets these days, it’s easy to believe that we’re so sexually liberated that there’s nowhere left to go. But the truth is, we’re all quite happy to discuss sex, when it comes to sexual problems, we suddenly get as shy and coy as our Victorian ancestors. This can be a problem for men who go in search of help in the world of male enhancement and, until the internet came along, many times people simply figured they were alone in their struggle. Now men from all over the world contribute to websites that offer penile enlargement reviews, tips on increasing libido and just about every other aspect of male sexuality.

As we have become more open to discussing sexuality in the open, we haven’t been as keen to openly discuss issues surrounding sexual enhancement products. Luckily, this seems to be changing every day. More and more people have begun to see the value in male enhancement devices, such as penis extenders, supplements and pumps. As this acceptance has grown and more people have begun to openly discuss their experiences, it has created an increasingly sexually liberated world where people can easily enhance their own sex lives safely.
